The Negative Space is an artist-first film lab specializing in motion picture and world-renowned scanning quality. We believe that the lab is vital to BOTH the technical side of analog film and photography AND the creative side. We are all filmmakers and photographers with two primary goals:
1) To help artists realize their creative vision with top-notch quality
2) To keep the analog mediums relevant and realistic for as long as possible!

We aim to be the best lab in the world, delivering amazing quality at a killer price, to keep you shooting film for many years to come.

Nicki Coyle is a filmmaker, preservationist, digital restoration artist, photochemical engineer, colorist, and an expert in film scanning and motion picture workflows. She has many years of high quality laboratory experience covering nearly every aspect of the film process.

“During my time at CU Boulder I fell in love with experimental film, but more importantly I fell in love with analog filmmaking. There was an enchantment to the flicker of the projector light, the whirr of the camera, the soft-sharp image quality of the medium. After CU I worked for many years at a motion picture film lab, Cinemalab Preservation Inc., the facility that preserved The Brakhage Collection. At Cinemalab I worked as the primary lab tech, printing and processing millions of feet of film for both production and preservation, and helped to build the digital restoration department. Here I created the lab’s dye-fade correction processes and restoration workflows using the Digital Vision toolsets. The lab closed its services in 2016 due to rising costs of facilities.

After the lab closed, I opened my own business to offer high end film scanning, restoration, and media transfer. With this I have continued Cinemalab’s work by handling many of our previous clients and running many of the original machines and procedures. My studio uses a high end production and archival level machine, the Lasergraphics Scanstation 6.5K HDR film scanner, which can handle any 8, 16, and 35 format for filmmakers, archives, and museums

Now the next stage in my mission is underway… Bringing high quality and affordable laboratory services to analog filmmakers. To do this I’ve secured a film processor and plan on offering supreme quality with insane pricing! Click here to learn more
